Mathematics of, by and for Peace
This book is the joint work of two friends who have dedicated their lives to peace theory and practice, but also have a love for mathematics. We have advanced degrees; Galtung from University of Oslo 1956, specializing in stochastic theory and relation algebra, Fischer from University of Bern 1968 with linear algebra as specialty.
The book brings peace and mathematics closer, as peace mathematics; showing what such concepts as numbers, sets, probability, logic, relations, matrices, graphs, games, systems, calculus, chaos and catastrophe can contribute to peace theory and practice.
To people with mathematics allergies, and to those with peace allergies, our message is simple: this book is written for you. Do not be frightened by new words, they will be introduced gently, with examples. You may find peace not only morally and politically, but also intellectually challenging. And you may find that even a little mathematics, without tears, is great fun, mind-stretching, making you stand on your toes seeing new horizons, including peace horizons.
The book is a joint product, but Fischer is the main author of the chapters 8-9-10 and Galtung of the rest.
Johan Galtung, born 1930 in Oslo, Norway, lives in Spain, France, Japan and the USA, mainly engaged in mediation and research. He has so far published 159 books and over 1600 articles and book chapters on peace and related issues. 41 of his books have been translated into 34 languages, for a total of 137 book translations. He founded TRANSCEND: A Peace, Development and Environment Network in 1993 and was founding rector of TRANSCEND Peace University 2003-2007 and again from 2011.
